Fuso

Where we bottle only the most delicious and characterful wines.

Fuso

Every year after harvest…people in Europe fill up large glass demijohns from their favorite producers…to later siphon off into smaller bottles at home.

It’s a humble gesture, and the spirit behind FUSO’s  characterful daily drinkers from our favorite organic farmers that we know and trust. We’ve explored and picked from the best terroirs in Italy, Germany, France (and maybe soon Spain!), from Brut Prosecco in the high Dolomites, to a savory Verdicchio in central Italy; a bone dry Rielsing from the Pfalz, and a zingy Gamay from where the Loire meets Burgundy!

more details of what FUSO is all about

FUSO started almost with the inception of PortoVino, when visiting one of our producers almost over 20 years ago.

During a producer vist after harvest and fermentation was settled down, we saw a patchwork of around fifty large bulbous glass demijohns filling the cellar floor between concrete tanks, élevage hoses, and boxes of library wines.

The cellar was in a bit of array, but the steam-punk aspect of it all was fascinating.

When we asked to taste what was in the demijohns, the producer took hold of the slender wine thief and gave us a taste. It was a mix of Barbera with a touch of a very lightly pressed Nebbiolo, and it was delicious!

From there, we asked to bottle it to take back to the US to offer to our customers, and that was the first batch. There were no labels...just 750ml bottles siphoned out of each demijohn.

Eventually, we worked with an Italian artist to make lithographs from which we would print the labels, and FUSO was born.

The hands on approach, form all of us helping the producer to siphon off the first batch with hoses and bottles scattered about, to the actual hand drawing of the labels remains within the spirit of what FUSO is today.

We're big believers in special wines, and special occasions, but we also like the little moments of with characterful daily drinker that made from real producers somewhere specific. One of our biggest joys is hearing from you all about a wine put you on a journey to explore other producers or bottles from the growing area, or, in some cases, to plan trip there.
